Well done Switzerland! 60.3% voted yes for two weeks paid paternity leave yesterday. This is a step into the right direction 👏🏻

❓When does it start?

The change in the law is expected to apply from January 1, 2021.

❓Who will get it?

All fathers of children born after December 31, 2020. This applies to all “legal” fathers (through marriage to the mother, through acknowledgment of paternity or through a court judgment).

❓How long is it?

With a 100% workload, a father is entitled to 10 days. These are available in the first 6 months after the birth of the child. ❗️Attention: After 6 months, all unused days expire! The vacation can be taken on 14 consecutive days (including the weekend) or on a daily basis (10 days).

Can it also be shortened?

Taking paternity leave is voluntary. The father can also take fewer days than he would be entitled to.

Who pays it?

Like maternity allowance, paternity leave is financed through the income compensation scheme (EO). For employees, the employer pays half of the contributions.

How much is paid?

The paternity allowance is 80% of the average earned income that the father earned before the child was born. That is a maximum of 196 francs per day (daily allowance).

Who gets the money?

If the employer pays the wages, he also receives the compensation. In all other cases, the father receives the compensation directly.

Is it paid automatically?

No. The paternity allowance must be requested from the competent compensation office. Contact your HR manager about this.

Are fathers covered during the time at work?

Yes. A father taking paternity leave must be able to take it without limiting other rights or risking losing his job.

Therefore:

The father's vacation may not be shortened.

Termination by the employer: If the father has not yet taken all of the paternity leave at the time of termination, the notice period will be extended by the number of remaining vacation days.

A lot of my clients are working mums with demanding jobs and it can often seem impossible to fit in a consultation.

From mid October, I offer lunch break consultations between 12 and 2pm. I can meet you in your lunch break at a cafe or restaurant near your office and we can discuss everything in more detail. Alternatively, we can arrange a Zoom call or if you are working from home, I can meet you at home.

When I support new parents with their newborn, I try to implement a few habits from the beginning that help the baby and the mother to sleep better at night. ⁠

⁠
🛌 At night, use as little light as possible. I usually recommend small night lights that don’t interfere with melatonin production. While babies don’t produce melatonin until they are around 3 months old, I feel it makes it easier for the baby and the mother to fall back asleep. ⁠
⁠
🛌 Minimal movement at night: I usually set up everything I need for the night close to my baby’s and my bed to avoid walking from room to room at night disturbing 'the night peace'⁠
⁠
🛌 Keep things as calm as possible. Speak in a soft voice, almost whispering. ⁠
⁠
🛌 There is no need to change wet nappies at night, unless the nappy is very full. Soiled nappies need to be changed though. ⁠
⁠
🛌 Swaddle your baby: A swaddle keeps your baby’s arm close to its body to inhibit their startle reflex and helps to your baby to feel calm. I like to Grosnug and Love to Dream™️ Swaddle. ⁠

🛌 Fresh air: A walk in the afternoon or just time spent outside, can help your baby (and you) to sleep better at night. ⁠

🛌 White Noise: Play it during nap times and throughout the night.

If you would like to book a maternity nurse to help you after your baby is born, I do recommend to book someone as soon as possible. Most of my clients contact me around week 6-8 of their pregnancy with contracts signed around the week 12 mark. A small percentage of clients book me no later than week 20 of their pregnancy, but at a later stage, I am usually not available anymore for nights/full days.⁠
